Frequently Asked Questions

Transportation

Which airport should I use?

The Santa Barbara Airport is a small and convenient little airport located right next to the university, serviced by several airlines. However, flights in and out of SBA can be expensive.

You might also opt to fly into the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). These flights are often cheaper and have fewer stops than flights into SBA, but then you will need to organize transport to Santa Barbara, which is around an hour and a half away, depending on traffic.

How do I get from LAX to Santa Barbara?

The most economical choice is the Santa Barbara Airbus, which makes multiple trips between LAX and their own station in Goleta, not far from UCSB. You will need to reserve a ticket on the airbus if you want to use it.

SuperShuttle is another more expensive option, but it will take you door to door from LAX to UCSB.

How do I get from SBA or the SB Airbus Station to UCSB?

Your housing package includes shuttle service between SBA or the SB Airbus station, assuming your flight/bus arrives/departs during their schedule of operation. Due to staffing shortages, USB Conference Services is not offering shuttle service at this time. You do have several other options for getting to UCSB from the airport or airbus station.

Route 11 of Santa Barbara MTD's bus system can pick you up from in front of SBA and drop you off on campus. You will likely need to walk from a campus stop to Manzanita Villages, probably for around 10 minutes. Any one-way trip on a SB MTD bus will cost $1.75.

Unfortunately city buses do not stop at the SB Airbus station. You can make the walk to Hollister Avenue and catch a bus from there, or you will can use taxis (try CitySearch or CarFree). Note that taxis from the airport to campus may cost $15 or more, and coming from the SB Airbus station still more. Lyft and Uber are also available from either of these locations.
